German-Swedish project will provide energy to half a million homes.

A wind farm consisting of 80 turbines will be built in the Wadden Sea around 70 kilometres southwest of the island of Rømø, according to energy company Vattenfall. The Swedish-based Vattenfall and Munich's municipal utility Stadtwerke München are behind the wind farm, which is scheduled to be completed in three years. It will reportedly be able to provide power for up to a half million households.

Construction of the wind farm is expected to be difficult and costly due to the water depth in the area, which is up to 30 meters in some places. The wind farm will be named DanTysk - 'tysk' being the Danish word for German - as the farm will lie close to the maritime border between Germany and Denmark. The first turbine is expected to be ready for operation by 2013.
